Flivasorb® and the management of exudate

چکیده
The management of wound exudate requires the clinician to have an understanding of what it is, why it is present and how to monitor and assess it accurately (White and Cutting, 2006). Wound exudate was described as nature’s balsam many years ago (White and Cutting, 2006) and is the fluid produced by an open wound. It is derived from fluid that has leaked from capillaries into body tissues (World Union of Wound Healing Societies [WUWHS], 2007). Exudate is produced at varying levels throughout the lifetime of a wound (Cutting, 2009). It is a complex phenomenon that requires careful nursing management if it is to assist healing (Adderley, 2008). leucocytes and essential nutrients (Dowsett, 2008). In chronic wounds, there is a tendency for the inflammatory response (an important element in the initial wounding response) to become exaggerated (European Wound Management Association [EWMA], 2008). Chronic wound fluid therefore has a high level of inflammatory mediators and activated MMPs (WUWHS, 2007), which are more corrosive than acute wound fluid to the wound and the surrounding skin. As a consequence of this theory (Mast and Schultz, 1996), new dressings have been developed that are designed to reduce protease levels (Schultz et al, 2005).

Evaluating a super absorbent dressing (Flivasorb) in highly exuding wounds.
This article reports an observational evaluation of 19 patients with highly exuding wounds. Flivasorb was used as a super absorbent dressing that could remove the harmful exudate fluid and promote a healthy wound bed. The outcomes demonstrated that Flivasorb is successfully absorbs large amounts of fluid, reduces the number of dressing changes required and therefore, reduces the cost of the pat...
متن کاملThe use of Flivasorb in highly exuding wounds.
Exudate can be an excellent indicator of what is happening within a wound and, therefore, provides valuable information during patient assessment. The volume, consistency, and particularly odour and colour, of any exudate will inform the practitioner about bacterial contamination, infection and stage of healing (Hampton and Collins, 2003). However, in the chronic wound, exudate must be effectiv...
متن کاملThe antileishmanial activity of Aloe vera leaf exudates: in vitro and in vivo
Background: According to the drug resistance and side effects of the standard treatments for leishmaniasis, achieving effective treatment with less side effects and more benefits is of paramount importance. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of Aloe vera leaf exudate on Leishmania major under in vitro and in vivo models, in inbred BALB/c mice. Methods: Different concentrations of bo...

متن کاملMorphological Exudate Detection in Retinal Images using PCA-based Optic Disc Removal
Diabetic retinopathy lesion detection such as exudate in fundus image of retina can lead to early diagnosis of the disease. Retinal image includes dark areas such as main blood vessels and retinal tissue and also bright areas such as optic disk, optical fibers and lesions e.g. exudate. In this paper, a multistage algorithm for the detection of exudate in foreground is proposed. The algorithm se...
